Never been discriminated out of a Guild. I myself now own a guild (20 members, PvP based) and I'm not ashamed to tell people I have already refused douzans of people for NOT speaking English...

Cba reading the intire topic, so this will probably have been said before, but there is good discrimination and bad one...

E.G: Someone who doesn't speak English in a PvP-guild where the tactics (on vent) are being called in English shouldn't be in that Guild.
However, someone who CAN speak English, but is Spanish (Origin) who isn't allowed in such a Guild is in fact bad discrimination.

Then again, I am for 100% Freedom of Speech (Freedom of "acts", whatever

). If someone wants to make a Nazi guild, it's their choice. If someone wants to run down the streets screaming racists remarks, that's his choice...

Erm... doesn't mean they're less intelligent? Quite the opposite... and here goes why.

I've always seen guilds as a group of people who have common goals or common interests. A typical interest is your country, ethnicity - I've seen several Polish, Spanish and Quebecer guilds, nothing wrong with it. I don't mind Christian or Islam guilds either. Because this is an online game; it's so much easier to team up with people you RELATE to than total strangers (PUGs). PvE guilds, PvP guilds, Italian or Greek guilds... no big difference to me. It's all a buncha people who have similar interests/goals and IMHO, it's what's important.

Over a year ago I saw a GLBT guild recruiting. I found it interesting and almost PMed the recruiter before thinking "wait. I don't know these guys, I'm not gonna join 'em... who knows if I'll even get along with them?" Even though I'm part of the community doesn't mean we'll have something else in common in this game. I've always wanted a PvE guild, I had one I didn't wanna leave, and I wouldn't leave my current one for a GLBT-only guild.

This is absolutely the truth. I consider myself to be slightly better than the "good natured, but sucks" player. I'm mediocre at builds and find farming boring but necessary. I think the most stereotypes affect me in GW is that I think all dutch people are rude and egotistical.

Or maybe there's this really popular dutch band called "Kut & Jammer", and that's what every dutch person is talking about. Who knows.

Age discrimination.

I'm approaching 15 but still get this all the time. Most people say that I'm much more mature than your average teenager. It's true, I've been complemented on eloquent speaking and have won numerous awards - and have generally always been an A student. I have a fair sense of morality and do not like to talk about stupid things like gossip, etcetera.

When I first began playing GW in 2005 I must have been, hmm...12? 13? I was still as mature, and despite this, the adults in my guild found some excuse to exclude me from things.

In fact, one officer, whom I despise and continue to, I remember would say things like "it's 8PM, time for little eldin to take his bath" and was amazed at me staying up past 9PM. I was 12/13 at the time, not six. Some people are just incredibly closed minded and their image of someone under 18 has clearly not updated as the generations and paradigm shifts went on.

In the olden days I'd say GW's community was a bit nicer, probably since GW had yet to carve its name in the Hall of Gaming, and most people playing it were people seeking a new experience. When GW gained notoriety (I blame the multi campaign setup, which gave GW way too much publicity than it needed), all the characters we could do without migrated from WoW and whatnot here.

Face it, GW society has degraded over time, there's nothing we can do except try to preserve our own mentality.

Random Koreans usually always rape me in HA. So i guess that's the only stereotype i have. I don't go blabbing my personal life to others online, because i know when other people do it to me i certainly do not give a damn, so i can't really say i've been stereotyped in-game.

One thing that is not too closely tied to stereotypical behavior is age. If you're 12, you're gonna sound like a 12 year old, everybody is going to know it, and deserve whatever's coming to you. If you've been on the internet long enough you don't need to ask --it's not even assuming-- you just know.

I loaded ToA with my monk, hoping to find a FoW group until my friends logged on, and I spotted a guy reminding his team that they needed one tank for FoW, but the group had like 2 already apparently. Since it was in local, thought I'd give my input and said "y'know, you don't -need- a tank for FoW anyways", that you can kite and whatnot. A random guy starts arguing with me, asking me if people wanted to run around (lol...) in groups.

At some point, I didn't understand what he had said because he used horrible grammar, and proceeded to call me a nerd for saying "well I'd have understood what you just said if you had decent English".

He went from calling me a nerd (heh) to calling me gay (haha) to assuming random stuff about me and "nerds", saying that they were corrupted and that they ran the government. When I said "someone is sour about the gov >_>", he said "well someone knows ur government". So I asked him about which government I was on, and he assumed French after 3 minutes because apparently, I was "hiding" (WTF...). But I'm Canadian and when I replied, he said something along the lines of "i knew it, no wonder why ur a pussy". It stopped when I told him that I had nothing to hide, that if I wanted to hide I'd have either stopped replying even to PMs (if he had PMed me), left the district or simply ignored him. But I didn't do either, so... gg.

So that kinda got me thinking. So this guy assumed I was a pussy for being a Canadian, and a nerd for liking good English (that we didn't even need in game, according to him... but he did call himself an idiot, I swear)? He didn't know me at all. For all I care and all he knew, I could've been British, Indian... doesn't mean I'm a wuss anyways >_>.

During the whole thing I wasn't even angry, just really amused on what this guy forged about me and literally believed it just based on how he interpreted the stuff I said. Way to spend a Saturday morning huh? x]

Nice Saturday morning Kusandaa, better than mine (bloody rampant consumerism! Grah!); reminds me that I've come across and been involved in, the same sort of thing. I don't remember them seeing as they're not all that important (and I have a bad memory anyway), but I don't remember the feelings of slight annoyance and bemusment. Far better than being angry.

Canadians as pussies? You gus have legal gay marriage, nothing 'pussy' about that, that's freaking brave considering everything that goes on in this world (I think Civil Partnerships need to be the state non-religious equivalent to Marriage, with all same rights and benefits).

Besides, we all know soccer/football players are the real pussies: Oh noes! I have fallen and cannot get up! Quick fetch the magic sponge!

I don't understand why he thought Canadians were pussies, I just don't get it... *shrug*. I should've told him how the French-speaking Higher-Canada (my history classes were in French, approx. translation from Haut-Canada... what Quebec was before being called Quebec) reacted when the English came and tried assimilating them, lol... to whoever didn't get Canada History classes, it wasn't pretty... x];;...

And anyways, let's say that if most WERE (note that this is an meant as possibility, and not a fact O_o) pussies, wouldn't mean everyone is. Thus stereotyping it all =_=.

Religion isn't supposed to be involved in the government, but it is when it comes to Civil Partnerships between the same sex. Religion is totally controlling the government for this topic BECAUSE it seems only the churchs won't allow it.

So much for coming to America for "Freedom" when the UK has legalized what a lot of people want first.

I dont care if you're black, white...gay, straight....christian, muslim... and quite frankly why do I (or anyone else) need to know this. I'm in a guild we have fun, we are good friends, I do PUG. No one online knows anything about me...nor do i feel the need to share anything with them. I treat GW as a game, and sure...youre gonna come across some rude people that is a fact of life. The more you open yourself up online the more chances you are going to get burned. Lots of brave people sit behind computers remember.

BrotherGrim, have you been reading much of this thread? Personal details can be guessed at by the most inane of comments, or even just by how someone acts. Also, many of see no reason to lie about who we are, so if asked a direct question ('Are you a girl?' for example) we'll respond with a direct answer ('Yes.); not to mention that the way some people use words can be found offensive and those who are offended speak out (read back a bit).

Because IMHO it's an issue that needs to be addressed to the community. A lot of those "issues" are sparked up by idle conversations, and not direct sharing. It's an online game. I'm not playing this to play on my own. Plus it's not most groups that will have leavers 'cause of personal issues, but you're not me. Example of idle convo in a long farming run... :

Guy #1: brb food, wife made BBQ ribs!

Guy #3: I don't have a wife, lol. must be good to come back and food's on the table ):
Me: I can't cook to save my life, so my husband does most of the cooking... I BURN WATER... COME ON!!!
Guy #2: you a girl?
Me: No, I'm a gay male o.o.
Guy #3: lol, cool

It's a game for me, but as I've stated before, you deal with people. And whether people like it or not, anywhere people are present, there's gonna be feelings, let's face it.

This thread was basically to sensiblize (sp? is it even a word? O_o) the community to social RL problems transposed to a game. Some people aren't able to let go of stereotypes their hear IRL and are ready to insult and hunt ya down, in-game, for IRL stuff that doesn't even affect them.
